Aaron and Rebecca – Proposal

January 19, 2011

Aaron came to me about two weeks ago saying he was going to propose to his girlfriend Rebecca and wanted to know if I would photograph it.  I didn’t even hesitate when I said yes.  We had originally planned for Thursday of this week, but since the ring came in early, Aaron wanted to push it up to Tuesday night instead.  Oceanaire was where they had their first Valentine’s day dinner so Aaron wanted to have it there.

The plan was pretty simple.  I was to casually get a table close enough to them that I could get a good picture, yet far enough away as to not be noticed.  Easier said than done, really.  I met with Aaron a few hours before the dinner to plan out what we were going to do.  You know what they say about the best laid plans.  There is always a little bit of luck involved and we were hoping to get lucky with our plan.

The closest table to Aaron and Rebecca would have been the obvious position, but that was way too close.  There was no way I could sit 10 feet from them with no cover and not be seen.  Because of this I chose the table right behind that one.  I was probably 20 feet away with one table in between me and them.  This meant I would have to shoot through a table of people just to get a clear shot of the proposal.

Well, it worked beautifully. I managed to get great shots of Rebecca’s reaction without being seen beforehand or afterward.  She had no idea I was there.  I wanted to be as discrete as possible so I didn’t take a single shot until Aaron pulled out the ring.  At that point Rebecca’s attention was so focused, I could have done almost anything and she wouldn’t have noticed.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the series.   In a couple months, keep an eye out here for their engagement pictures!
